August 28, 2018 – Redmond, WA – The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) announced today that the United States Department of Education (USDE) has officially renewed recognition of NWCCU as the regional accrediting body for the Northwest states, valid for the maximum five-year recognition period. The USDE commended the Commission on their “support for innovative solutions to move higher education into the 21st Century.”
“Renewal of recognition of NWCCU by the USDE is a significant accomplishment for the Commission,” said Dr. Joseph Brimhall, University of Western States President and NWCCU Board Chair. “This allows NWCCU to continue to serve in the critical role of institutional accreditor in the seven states of the Pacific Northwest.”
Under the leadership of Interim President Marlene Moore, NWCCU Commissioners, institutions, and staff responded to USDE regulations concerning governance, quality assurance, and student achievement as governed by the NWCCU Standards, Policies, and practices.
“We are extremely pleased with the renewal of recognition of NWCCU by the USDE,” said NWCCU President Sonny Ramaswamy. “The renewal of recognition will allow NWCCU to continue to focus on student success through an accreditation system that recognizes, supports, and celebrates the accomplishments of its diverse institutions and student bodies.”
