V6I2: Advancing Political Civility

George Fox University was founded by evangelical Quakers, whose faith includes a clear vision of shalom as nonviolence, justice, and right relationships. That ethos lives in the institution’s mission and vision. Quakers believe good decision-making requires listening to every voice in the community, because aspects of Truth might be articulated by anyone.

To help their community heal and restore relationships, Professor Mock and President Baker conceived and provided leadership in establishing the George Fox University Civility Project.

There is no one-size-fits-all model to create the student-centric, transformative educational ecosystem to promote community and a sense of belonging: It is context and mission dependent. However, effective programs share many elements.
