V6I2: Letter from the President

As I have watched the unfolding events in America since October 7, particularly the heartbreaking and traumatizing incidents of antisemitism and islamophobia, I have wondered, how is it that some institutions seemed to have been caught completely unawares and become reactive, while others appeared to take this in stride and managed the dissension with constructive engagement of the various factions. What we have learned is that these latter institutions take a long view of such situations and deployed planned and thoughtful approaches that included hosting dialog and constructive discourse, which brought groups together focused on the similarities, rather than on differences, as a way to address extant challenges.

V6I2: Advancing Political Civility

George Fox University was founded by evangelical Quakers, whose faith includes a clear vision of shalom as nonviolence, justice, and right relationships. That ethos lives in the institution’s mission and vision. Quakers believe good decision-making requires listening to every voice in the community, because aspects of Truth might be articulated by anyone.

To help their community heal and restore relationships, Professor Mock and President Baker conceived and provided leadership in establishing the George Fox University Civility Project.

V6I2: Six NWCCU Institutions Among Top 150 Eligible for 2025 Aspen Prize

The Aspen Institute named six NWCCU institutions as the top 150 institutions eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence: Bellevue College, Big Bend Community College, Green River College, Pierce College, Snow College, and South Puget Sound Community College.

V6I2: Reflecting on the 2023 Annual Conference

Thank you to those who joined us for the 2023 NWCCU Annual Conference held at the Hyatt Regency in Seattle, WA November 8-10. We welcomed over 500 attendees from across 160 institutions.

V6I2: D.E.I. versus d.e.i.

I have observed two predominant ways by which society expresses the acronym that uses the fourth, fifth, and ninth letters of the alphabet. The first is what I call uppercase ‘DEI,’ which stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The other version is lowercase ‘dei,’ which stands for divisiveness, extremism, and intolerance.

V6I2: Automotive Mechanics Program in Prison Sparked by Partnership

Western Nevada College (WNC) enrolled its first group of students in its Automotive Mechanics Certificate of Achievement program in August 2023 at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) in Carson City, Nev. Although not the first program of its kind in the country, it is an exciting opportunity for men incarcerated at NNCC. The auto bay has been busy with activity as students learn the basics in their AUTO 101, Introduction to General Mechanics class through lectures and hands-on assignments. This is the first of several semesters for these students as they earn Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications and the Certificate of Achievement.
