Once reserved for the trades, apprenticeships and other on-the-job learning experiences have reemerged within the mainstream of higher education as a fast-growing option for students of all backgrounds and pursuits. These pathways hold immense opportunities to create more equitable, learner-centered opportunities– and ones closely linked with gainful employment opportunities upon graduation– but they also present significant new questions. Among them, higher education is held to certain statutory accreditation requirements that the government’s apprenticeship processes and existing data collection tools are not built to support.
